Nintendo Directs have been in short supply, so updates for older games like Splatoon 2 haven't gotten the spotlight they might otherwise have been granted. For example, despite persistent rumors of a larger celebration around Mario's 35th anniversary and a collection of the plumber's 3D titles, fans have only received notice of a few board game tie ins. While there have been plenty of fun releases like Paper Mario: The Origami King and the blockbuster smash that was Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Nintendo has kept its plans close to its vest. Nintendo's 2020 has been a quiet one when compared to the past few years of the Switch's life. Two other Splatfests will follow, although their subjects are not known at the time of writing. The exact date is August 21, and the in-game event will run for 48 hours following its launch. The first, a classic Splatfest redo that asks players to choose between Chicken and Egg, is set to begin in about a month.
In the next tweet, they announced a series of three new Splatfest events. Now that Splatoon 2 is entering its third year and fans begin to clamor for something new, Nintendo is giving a reason to return to the old favorites. Despite its multiplayer focus, the game also received a single-player expansion that introduced Octo playable characters and expanded the unique lore of one of Nintendo's newest universes. The game has upwards of 20 maps in rotation for its standard modes, and that's not including the novel Salmon Run mode that introduces PvE combat to the equation.
While Splatoon 2 hasn't been Nintendo's focus in 2020, it's a full package that's still well worth people's time. While it isn't new DLC or threads for your favorite Octo combatant, a set of three of the franchise's signature user poll contests should refill the queues and provide a reason for lapsed fans to make a return. However, without the push of Splatfests that has existed for most of the game's history, some percentage of the player base will drift to other games with more active updates. Splatoon 2 is still a very popular Nintendo Switch title, one of the best ways to enjoy the system's online multiplayer components.
